DIY Bath Toy Bag
For some time now I have been wanting to find something to house my boys' bath toys. I even put it on my littlest one's Christmas list. Needless to say, everything out there seems to come with suction cups which are, let's face it, a joke. So, I took matters in to my own hands. I had seen a post through Pinterest suggesting using a shower rod and some metal hanging baskets. I thought "genius". Then, upon a hectic trip to Walmart and numerous scans up and down the same aisles I was ready to give up on finding these elusive "baskets"...so I did. I came up with what I like to think of as a better version.
Items you will need:
- shower curtain rod (mine isn't pictured but be sure to use the appropriate size for your tub/shower width)
- plastic shower curtain (I went with the cheapest I could find but if you are concerned about durability or would prefer a fun pattern, go with something "fancier")
- shower hooks (I would suggest the kind that make a complete connection in case the bag gets bumped or pulled)
- sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch
- scissors :)
- ruler
- hole punch or awl
- tape (not shown, I used scotch but it didn't peel off so easy)
- tape measure (optional)
- dry erase marker (optional)
Let's Begin:
- Unfold your shower curtain and cut a piece from the top about as wide as 3 of the pre-made holes and 27" long. (you can cut yours larger or smaller to suit your needs)
- Fold up the length of your cut piece so that it sits about an inch or so under the edge with the holes. (I didn't do any real measuring for this project but if you have specific toys or items you would like to store, measuring for them would be wise)
- Tape the edges of the plastic together. (pins won't work for this)
- Use a wide zig-zag stitch to sew up each side of the plastic edges keeping a narrow seam allowance. (You could be finished here but if your bag is as wide as mine was it will hang open quite a bit and you risk pulling at the seams too much)
- Using your ruler and dry erase marker, make 2 straight lines on the "bag" so that you now have 3 sections. (these lines can go all the way down the bag or only part way depending on how you would like the toys etc. to be separated)
- Sew a zig-zag stitch along each of your lines.
- Using a hole punch or awl, poke several holes through the bottom of the bag to allow water to drain out.
- Hook a shower hook through each of the holes in your bag.
- Slide the bag on to your curtain rod and mount your rod tightly to the back wall of your shower.
- Fill your bag with toys or whatever you like.
Your very own Bath Toy Bag
I think I am going to make another smaller version with more pockets to house all of my boys' little shampoos and body washes. This time I might use bias tape at the seams for a fun pop of color as well as extra reinforcement. Stay tuned for my post on that one!
